The 20 minute dress!

Check out the dress I made for Lily today in 20 minutes! I love it! I think it looks so cute on her. She wanted to do a "BIG CRAFT" today, so I asked her if she wanted to sew. She picked out this cherry fabric from my stash and I found the red ribbon with white polka-dots. AND 20 minutes later... What a fun project with my big girl! I think it turned out pretty good as long as you don't look too closely ;).

Pita Quesadillas with Cilantro Hummus

I've recently been trying to add more vegetarian meals to our menu. Don't get me wrong, we're not vegetarians. But, it just occurred to me that you don't have to be vegetarian to eat vegetarian meals, right? Anyway, I found this one in my recent issue of Vegetarian Times and I REALLY enjoyed it, so I wanted to share...

Pita Quesadillas with Cilantro Hummus

Hummus
1/2 cup cilantro leaves
2 cloves garlic, peeled
1 1/2 cup cooked chickpeas (1 15 oz can, rinsed and drained)
2 Tbs. lime juice
2 Tbs. olive oil

Quesadillas
4 7 inch whole wheat pitas, split crosswise
4 jarred roasted red bell peppers, drained and sliced into strips
1 1/2 cups baby spinach leaves

1. Preheat oven to 350 deg F. To make Hummus: Process cilantro and garlic in food processor until chopped. Add chickpeas, lime juice, oil and 1/4 cup water; puree 3 minutes or until creamy.

2. To make Quesadillas: Place 4 pita halves on baking sheet. Spread each with 1/2 cup Hummus. Top with peppers, spinach and remaining pita halves. Bake 10 minutes, or until crisp. Cut into triangles and serve.

A Fairy Garden

A few weeks ago, when my parents were visiting, we planted our garden! It's been so fun for all of us to watch it grow. The kids love to closely inspect the garden every day.

This week, Lily, Madeline and their cousin Grace decided to dig up some of the rolly polly bugs from the garden and create a habitat for them. We have a dinosaur egg house from Little People that worked perfectly. The girls filled the house with dirt and grass and then about 20 rolly polly bugs. The Dino Egg is now partially buried in the garden, so the rolly polly bugs can come and go as they please.

On Friday (April 16th), Lily and Madeline were again playing in the yard and Lily asked me how we could get the fairies to come and live in our garden. I told her I didn't know and we decided to look it up on the computer. There were a list of things we found that we could do. Some were planting certain types of plants (we had some of them), but most importantly, it said we needed to ask them. The website also said that fairies loved to live in Oak trees. Lily was delighted to learn that we had some Oak trees in our yard! It was so cute to watch Lily and Madeline go up to all of the trees in our yard and ask the fairies to come live in our garden.

I posted on Facebook that Lily wanted to invite the fairies and I asked if anybody had any ideas. I got a few responses. I learned that fairies like shiny things and chocolate and they do favors for you if you earn them. They want everyone to take care of the earth and animals. There were also links to fairy houses! I asked Lily and Madeline if they wanted to build a fairy castle. Of course, they said YES!

So we got to work. I found some shoe boxes, paper towel rolls and duct tape. After the initial construction, we painted it. Here's the painted castle...

It just didn't seem to be complete yet. So the girls and I went through some craft supplies and we collected "pretty things". Glitter paper, stickers, embellishments, gift bags and most important hot glue.

Here's our finished castle! I have to admit, it turned out better than I thought. I planned to keep it outside, with the full knowledge that it won't last long out there because it is made from cardboard. But, I think it's so pretty, I just can't doom it. We've decided to keep it inside, except for when the girls want to play with it. Maybe on a nice night when we know it won't rain, we can leave it outside for the fairies...

Our garden is in full bloom!

A BIG Boy Room!

Check out this gorgeous quilt that Grandma Marcia made for Wyatt! I LOVE it! She used some of the items from Wyatt's crib set (bumper, crib skirt, etc.) and then magically put them together to make this quilt for his big boy bed. Wyatt LOVES it! When he saw it the first time, he climbed up on the bed and jumped and jumped and jumped...

It's hard to tell in the pictures, but along the border, Marcia quilted firetrucks. It looks like they are driving around the edge. So cool!

It's been a scary week.

Our little Lily has been sick this week and it's been pretty scary. I'm writing this post on Friday, April 9th. As of today, she is running around and acting normal, no fever and her rash is clearing up. But, it's been a long week.

On Easter Sunday, Lily woke up with a rash. The rash was mostly on her arms and legs. I thought it was probably an allergic reaction to the antibiotics she had been on (Omnicef). I gave her some Benedryll and I thought we'd just watch her and make sure it went away. After about an hour, her knees started to swell up. We couldn't really tell if the swelling was from the rash or from something else. I called my pediatrician. The doctor on call thought the Benedryll was probably the right thing to do. She said that allergic reactions can take a day or two to clear up, so I shouldn't expect immediate results. She said to come in the next day if it got worse.

It got worse.

On Monday, Lily's knees were dark purple or black. Her feet were swollen. The rash had spread and changed. It was now all over her body. I called my pediatrician as soon as the office opened and I got an appointment. I took Wyatt and Madeline to MDO and tried to keep Lily (and myself) calm for the morning. Her appointment was at 11:00. Lily's doctor was worried. She thought that it looked like more than an allergic reaction. She called the rash Erythema Multiforme. Lily had some blood drawn and we need to wait a few hours for the test results. The scariest thing was that Lily couldn't walk. The swelling in her legs was making it too painful to walk. When she would stand on her own she would start shaking.

Monday night, Lily woke up 4 times feeling very itchy and uncomfortable.

I talked to my pediatrician on Tuesday morning. Lily's test results showed only 1 concerning issue. She was swollen. We could tell that from looking at her, but the test level was extra high, so there was concern that there could be swelling in her heart. We needed to take a trip to the cardiologist.

Lily had an EKG and an Echocardiogram. Her heart was normal. There was no swelling or any indication of illness in her heart. We were so relieved. Lily got to bring home a picture from the Echocardiogram that showed all 4 chambers of her heart. She was excited about that.

I spoke again with my pediatrician and she was so happy to hear that Lily's heart was healthy. She said that we had eliminated all of the emergency situations, and that we should just wait and see for 24 hours what happens.

On Tuesday night, Lily got a fever. It never spiked very high. It stayed between 100.8 and 101.3. The fever persisted all day on Wednesday. The swelling in her ankles and knees and hands was significantly reduced. Her eyes and face were a little swollen now. Her rash seemed to track with her fever. As the medicine wore off, the rash looked worse. On Wednesday afternoon, I spoke with my pediatrician again and we decided that Lily needed to see a Rheumatologist. Appointment made for Thursday at 3:00. Wednesday was the low point of the week. Her fever made me profoundly sad. I didn't know what was wrong with her, but my internet research led me to scary things like Rheumatic Fever or juvenile arthritis. I spent the day crying off and on. All of us got a good night of sleep on Wednesday night, so we woke up better able to face the day on Thursday.

Lily woke up looking and feeling tons better on Thursday. Her rash was MUCH better. She still had a fever, but her behavior and mood seemed to be back to normal. She wanted to get dressed. She was playing with her brother and sister. She could run. She was itching a lot more than the days before. I gave her some Benedryll and ibuprofen. I spent the morning filling out paperwork and getting ready for the appointment.

At our appointment, the doctor spent a lot of time talking to us and listening to what we have been through this week. She carefully examined Lily and was amused at her flexibility. Lily was her silly self and spent the time in the doctors office coloring and jumping on the colored squares and acting like a silly 5 year old. Unfortunately, medicine isn't an exact science. We still don't have a diagnoses. But we have nearly ruled out the scary things that it looked like earlier in the week. Most likely, Lily does not have Rheumatic Fever, HSP or SOJIA.

As of this writing, we think that Lily may have had a strong immune response to either a bacteria/virus or to the antibiotics that she was on (for strep). If that is the case, she will continue to get better and there will be no lasting effects. Another case may be that Lily has some kind of reactive arthritis. Her Rheumatologist wants to check her again in two weeks, to see how her swelling looks. She also wants another blood test in 4 weeks. Lily is going to be on an antinflamitory for now, just in case.

Today (Friday), Lily looks great. She still has some general redness, but nothing even close to what she looked like on Monday. I kept her home from school again because she did have a fever yesterday. But, she does not have one today. I am very hopeful that this was an isolated incident and that there will be no lasting effects.

Whew... I couldn't have gotten through this week without the support and help from Scott's parents and the preschool where my kids go. Dennis and Marcia were available and on call to help us 24/7. They took care of Madeline and Wyatt every day this week. Escuelita was wonderful too. They let me bring Wyatt on days that he is not scheduled. It is a big relief to know that my children are being loved and well cared for in my absence. My family and I are so lucky to have such wonderful family and friends to help us through these things. Thank you!

Spring Pictures

Just before Easter, I took these beautiful pictures of my kids. It was really hard to choose which ones to post here. I took the kids to the Lady Bird Wildflower Center. We had a ball! They were very good and cooperative. I have to say, it was probably the most fun I've ever had taking their pictures. I posted all of the pictures on Facebook (about 50 pictures). Here are the 10 that I think are the best. Enjoy!

Zooma 2010

On March 27, 2010 I ran my second Half Marathon. I ran the Austin Zooma race. It was tough! What a beautiful day and a beautiful run. It's out in Bastrop county at the Hyatt Lost Pines resort. The resort is situated in a densely wooded area. We ran through the forest (on the road) and we saw a ton of beautiful wild flowers along the way. The weather was perfect, a cloudy morning that kept the sun from making it too hot. Awesome.

Thank you to Scott and the kids for supporting me! I couldn't have done it without you!

This is Kelly, my running buddy! We've been training together for 2 years, but this was the first race that we did together. She's a big reason why I have been able to keep running. Thanks Kelly!

Bikes!

For Lily's birthday, we got her a big girl bike. It's a big deal to us, because this is the bike that she is going to learn how to ride without training wheels on. I think she looks like such a big girl when she is riding it. We've been practicing. She's doing a great job steering and stopping. It's fun! Madeline inherited Lily's tricycle and Wyatt is now riding Madeline's old bike. We got some new handle bar streamers and a bell to help Madeline get excited about her new bike. The weather has been so beautiful. Scott and I are enjoying being outside with the kids. Life is great!

Papa Kenny and Grandma Cindi Visit!

Papa Kenny and Grandma Cindi came to visit during spring break. We had a ball! We had some beautiful weather and we got to plant our garden (pictures to come later). As usual, we were so busy, I didn't take enough pictures... sigh... but I got a few on their last night, so here they are!
