For the Love of Hamsters

So, we got hamsters   I actually wasn't thrilled with the idea.  I had little rodent type pets as a kid and I remember the smell.  I've been really enjoying living pet free since we moved and I was hesitant to give it up.  However, the kids were very keen to have a pet and I thought that hamsters would make a good small apartment pet while we are here.  And also, they don't live too long, so it's not a huge commitment.

I have to say, after all of my misgivings, the hamsters are really sweet.  We chose Roborovski Hamsters.  There wasn't really a plan.  I just took the kids to the pet shop.  We looked over the hamsters and in one of the cages there were 3 tiny baby hamsters all cuddled together.  The kids decided that it was perfect and we ended up with three little hammies.  They are sweet because they don't get very big.  However, they are really fast!

Their names are Benjamin, Girlie-Slickie-Bickie, and Hamsea.  We learned after we brought them home that we have 2 girls and 1 boy.  We now have 2 cages.  I don't want baby hamsters!!

Over the weekend, Lily made a hamster garden.  The white sand it actually the hamster bath sand.

Lily is especially enamored with her hamster.  He seems to like her too.  He lets her carry him around everywhere and often will fall asleep in her hands.  The kids have been very responsible with keeping the cages clean and making sure the hamsters are fed, watered and bathed every day.  So far, the lesson in pet ownership is going great!

Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Happy New Year!  It's Chinese New Year.  Singapore celebrates Chinese New Year with 2 days of public holiday (no school, no work).  The kids were invited to dress up in Chinese clothes on Friday for school.  I thought the girls were adorable!  Wyatt doesn't have school on Fridays, so he didn't dress up.

2013 is the Year of the Snake.

The Year of the Snake is a year for reflection, planning and searching for answers.  Historically, the year of the Snake has never been peaceful.  Our last Year of the Snake was 2001 (September 11th attacks) and the previous Snake year was 1989 where Chinese forces crushed pro-democracy protests around Tiananman Square.  The Snake is the strongest negative force in the Chinese cycle and it follows the strongest positive force (dragon).  Perhaps the calamities of the Snake are resulted from excesses committed during the Dragon reign.

As for me, 2013 looks like an excellent year.  I can't wait to discover the adventures and lessons it has in store.  Happy New Year to you!  Gong Xi Fa Cai!

A Picture Study 3: Arab Street

My photography adventure continues...  Today I went to Arab Street.  Arab Street is a street in Singapore, but it is also used to describe the area surrounding Arab Street.  It's a beautiful area with many fabric shops, basket shops and spices.  There are numerous restaurants and bars in this area as well.  It's a great place to find Middle Eastern Food, smoke a hookah or listen to live music.

Sultan Mosque is located on a walking street called Muscat Street next to Arab Street.
