Baby Lions!

The Austin Zoo has baby lions! It's actually more exciting than that, they are Barbary Lions, which is a breed of lions that is nearly extinct. Scientists believe they are extinct in the wild and less than 100 exist in captivity. Here's an article with more information: http://www.austinzoo.org/images/up/File/AustinZoo_Lions_2-8-10_v3.pdf

Viewing of the cubs is available on a very limited basis, only 3 hours per week! It all worked out for me on Monday, Feb 22. I took the kids to the zoo at just the right time and the weather was beautiful. We got to see the two little lion cubs. At the time, they were about 6 weeks old and weighing about 15 pounds. The cubs were just 1/2 pound at birth and they will be about 300 lbs when they are fully grown.

We are Austin Zoo members, so I plan to take the kids back as often as I can, so we can watch these little guys grow up. I didn't get too many pictures. I was there by myself and the kids needed some management, but I got a couple of shots. Enjoy!
